SPOTLIGHT II: The Spokes

The Spokes are UC Davis' premier all-female a cappella group, founded in 2004, and can often be found singing on campus and around the town of Davis. The Spokes have taken performance tours throughout California, stopping in places like Los Angeles, Berkeley, Santa Cruz, and San Francisco. Their goals for the future include broadening their already diverse repertoire, performing as much as possible, and bringing a cappella music back into the mainstream. Just as a bicycle wheel cannot spin without all its spokes, this all-female, all-fabulous group depends on the dedication of every girl to achieve its goals and remain one of Northern California’s most unique and talented music groups! https://www.facebook.com/TheSpokesUCD/

WORKSHOP SESSION II: CircleSinging

CircleSinging can be described lots of ways: vocal improvisation, vocal “jamming”, add-a-part/change-a-part, vocal orchestra, “voicestra”, a “drum circle” for singers, or just plain “make it up” singing. It’s done all over the world in countless different ways and it dates back to the earliest forms of human singing. CircleSinging is a “mistake-free zone,” an opportunity to improvise in collective harmony. Join members of legendary a cappella group SoVoSo, Zoe Ellis and Bryan Dyer, for this interactive workshop!

LUNCH SESSION: Leading With Intention

Join us for this unique lunch session with a panel of women leaders from the a cappella community. The discussion will be facilitated by WACA Executive Director Lisa Forkish and will explore the ways in which we have power and agency as leaders (humans!) in the world. Joni Mitchel said, "When the world becomes a massive mess with nobody at the helm, it's time for artists to make their mark." How do we make our mark? Bring your lunch (or have it delivered) so you can experience this rich and necessary conversation.

WORKSHOP SESSION I: Spectrum Singing

Of the many styles of singing, none has been more contentious to voice teachers and students than the belt voice. Often wrongly considered dangerous and risky, and rarely addressed in classical voice studios, belting is the often maligned and rarely researched sister to classical voice techniques. Spectrum Singing is Dr. Erin Hackel’s proven method of teaching singers to perform healthfully in all styles. Spectrum will show you how to use your voice in a healthful, functional way that eliminates all breaks, cracks and passagio issues. Learn to belt high with no strain or stress, and how to maximize your vocal potential.
